PHANCON 2013
Fairborn Ohio,  USA
October 21-24, 2013

GUEST SPEAKER

 Col Ralph Wetterhan, USAF (ret){bio}

    F-4 Air Force Museum

  (FG 829)

PhanCon is an annual international gathering of folks who flew, maintained, supported, photographed, tracked, modeled, or just plain enjoyed the sound of freedom promoted by this premier fighter of the 60's, 70's,  80's and 90's.  Now celebrating over 50 years in action, the F-4  is still flying today in defense of many nations around the world, and while no longer on the front line in the US, she still serves an important role there too.

We get together to share stories, re-establish old friendships, examine memorabilia,  and  when possible, view the F-4 in action.   Our primary purpose is preserving the heritage of the F-4, and this PhanCon is just but one of the endeavors the F-4 Phantom II Society supports. One does not need to be a member of the Society to attend, although we encourage you to join the Society in support.

You will see at the end of this page a list of folks coming in from all over the world.  We encourage you to join us.

This year the Society the members decided for a change of venue and voted to visit the Air Force National Museum at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio.  Based on what members who have already been there recommend we plan to spend two days at the Museum, plus visits to other local aviation historical sites.

The third morning we go to the Huffman Prairie Flying Field Interpretive Center located on Wright Brothers Hill.  There we can see an orientation movie and exhibits on the Wright brother's exploration of flight, as well as current advancements in aviation technology being worked on at Wright-Patterson. We will then visit the site of the Wright brothers flying school at Huffman Field. Next will be Carillon park devoted to the history of the region from Dayton's founding in 1796 through today.  We will see the original 1905 Wright Flyer III (the world's first practical airplane), plus other inventions.

To cover transportation and facility rentals the conference fee this year will be $135.   Current members and immediate family receive a special discounted rate of $120.  The Wednesday evening Banquet is NOT included in the registration fee and should be paid for separately during registration ($30). F-4 Society Membership must be valid through October 24th, 2013. Not sure if you are current? Log in to our website* using your email of record and check your membership status there.  If not current or not a member you can renew/join during registration.

We are closely monitoring Congress's progress on reopening the NMUSAF.  We plan to make a final decision on whether to hold PhanCon or not by Oct 18th.

Wed, 10/16  1925 EST   The Societies BOD has just finished a teleconfernce call and PhanCon 2013 is a GO.  The past several days have been filled with phone calls to the NMUSAF, hotel, airlines, and bus company working out all the what-ifs.  Based on the progress made today by Congress we expect the NMUSAF will indeed be up and running by Saturday... they said they would be open with-in 24 hours of the bill's being passed.  WHEW!  We've been sweating bullets all week.  Know you have been concerned as well.  We plan to have a great time.

Hotel

We have discount rates set up at our primary hotel, the Holiday Inn Fairborn,  (website Group Code: F4P or if calling mention group rate: F-4 Phantom II Society). Standard double, single king or king with a sofa bed are available for $100 per night. We reserved fifty rooms. Call 1-888-HOLIDAY.

Room reservations must be made by Sept 29th, 2013.

Schedule  (Tentative)

You will see below that two days are devoted to the Museum itself, there is just that much to see.  On the second day we arrive an hour before it normally opens and will have a special briefing and access to Col Olds F-4.  In the plan are a short side trip at the end of each day to a place of historical interest.

The third day we plan to offer a tour to the GE Plant.  We will need to generate an access roster for that.
